Laying laminate over vinyl flooring is not a tough job if you do it right. At Billy’s Carpets, not only we offer the best laminate flooring deals Brimington but we also offer insights to our customers on how they can efficiently install it. This guide is also created to help you install laminate if you already have vinyl flooring. So let’s get started:
Laying Laminate on Top of Vinyl Flooring:
- Use pry bar to remove baseboard and quarter-round. Make sure to remove them carefully so you can reinstall them without having to buy them again.
- Vacuum your vinyl floor’s surface to remove any dirt and debris, wash it with mild detergent afterwards and then let it dry.
- Now take foam underlayment’s piece and laminate flooring’s panel and lay it against door jambs that are inside the room.
- Now take the rest of the underlayment foam and cover the vinyl flooring with it. This will work as the barrier between the vinyl and laminate and will also provide you with some degree of cushioning. You can utilize utility knife to cut the foam and duct tape to join its pieces.
- Take quarter inch spacers and place them against baseboard after every two feet, do this around the whole perimeter of your room.
- You will now place the laminate flooring. Place the first board against one of the walls (long walls are preferred). Position this board in a way that its tongue side is facing you while the groove side is facing the wall (against the spacer).
- Now just apply glue on the sides of the tongue and attach it with the groove of the second board and press it into place. If some glue seeps through the joint, wipe it away before it dries.
- Keep on laying the first course of the boards until you reach room’s other side. If, in the end, the full-sized board does not fit, measure the distance between the spacer at the wall and the last board’s edge and then cut the board using circular saw to fit it. When you place the last bard, use edge of pry bar to lock the board into place.
- Take a board, cut it in half using the circular saw. One of the halves of this board will be installed at the start of second course. This will allow you to easily stagger the boards when installing them in second course to make the floor look better and strengthen it as well.
- Now install board’s second course using the same method but this time, you will not only put glue at the side edges of the tongues but also at the tongues at the back of laminate boards you put in the first course.
- Use tapping block by placing it against second course’s board’s tongues and then tap the block to tighten the both course’s boards together.
- Keep laying the flooring until you get to the other side of the room. Be sure to stagger the laminate boards when placing them and then put painter’s tape over the joints after every sixth course to make sure the boards stay tightly joint until the glue between them fully cures.
- Calculate distance between the spacers at the back wall and the end of floorboards and then cut floor boards accordingly. Also, cut the notches into boards for the doorways.
- Take out the spacers you put at the back wall and put glue at the tongues of the last course of the boards.
- Install last boards by fitting their grooves over tongues of the previous boards and tighten their joints using a pry bar between the last course of boards and the wall to push the boards together.
- Allow the glue to cure for over 12 hours and then remove the painter’s tape and nail down the quarter-round into its position and you are done.
This is all that you need to do and you will be able to successfully install laminate over vinyl flooring without taking vinyl flooring out.
